It's a brisk fall morning here in New York City and the scarecrows are out! Today marks the opening of the 2008-09 NHL season. A day that most nine to fivers living in reality have been waiting for for about 2 months. We've already been writing this season's blog for a month and nigh a point has been scored nor a tripping penalty called. In about 4 hours, however, that changes, as the Rangers and the Lightning face off in Prague. Basically I don't give a shit about either of the games today except hoping that someone important gets hurt or bitten by a Czech wolf. I know that's wrong to say but if you don't think I was praying for one of the Phllies on line one off C.C.'s nuts the other day you are mistaken. More importantly I'm taking in my first live hockey event of the season tonight at the Prudential Center in scary Newark, NJ. Luckily NJ Transit drops you off on the home bench so we won't have to brave much of the city, but it's important to never let your guard down when in New Jersey. Especially when there's a PLLL on the loose. I'm guessing attendance in the arena tonight will range from 4,322 to 4,324, as the Devils don't draw well during the regular season much less this time of year.
Which brings me to my point. If you're old and lonely and live in North Jersey or New York you should come out to the game tonight. Write me an e-mail and I'll come find you when you get lost trying to find your gate and we can sit together and shoot the shit about anything you want. If you want to tell me how your best friend gave you that leather Navy vest with all the patches on it right before he died I'll be there to listen. If you want to tell me how enjoyable the five o'clock meatloaf special was at your local bar last night I'll tell you how much I love meatloaf. If you want to rant about how back in your day there weren't any "coloreds" in the league I'll explain to you that Arron Asham is Chinese not "colored."
I'm going to get old and lonely some day. We all are. I'm kind of dissapointed that this message is being sent out on a weekend, as our readership drops roughly 50% on Saturdays and Sundays. Do over 600,000 of you really not go online on the weekend? Let's all do something nice for an elderly person today. Whether it be not honking at them and fingering them while driving, holding the door for them, helping them carry something, or carrying them themselves. Let's all do something. Because you know none of us does anything for others. If the elderly gross you out then walk into a random hospital room and give a kid a big teddy bear full of drugs if you can hand it to him before security takes you down. Tell him to take them all it his pain will disappear. Let's all do something nice today.
It's a great day for hockey.
p.s. - And if you're wondering why I'm feeling so connected to the world today it's because of a link that was sent to me by the lovely Grace. I'm usually about 4 years behind on things so it's about right I only hear about this guy now. Don't be afraid to get drunk, get emotional, and watch this clip. Just because I used to say it in college doesn't mean it's not the freakin' weekend.
