Flyers Gameday: Sharks in the Water
Written by Fran

Two of the hottest clubs in hockey meet in San Jose tonight as the Flyers visit the Shark Tank for the last meeting of the two teams this season. The last meeting was a drubbing by the Sharks in Philly, one for which the Flyers hope to repay the Sharks tonight at 10pm. After Boosh put up a solid effort against LA, it's Razor's turn against another high octane offense.

The likes of Marleau, Thornton, and Heatly will be all over the ice and are the top 3 guys that Pronger and co. will need to shut down. Couple that will their powerplay quarterback, Dan Boyle, and you get as scary of a man-advantage as there is in the entire league. It'll be necessary for the Flyers to play aggressive and smart, a thing they don't always do. No dumb penalties to give their big guys any chances. Secondary scoring comes from the likes of Manny Malhotra (2 g's against us in the first meeting), Ryan Clowe, and Devin Setoguchi(probable). They might not be household names, but these three can certainly bury the biscuit. I hope the defense got all its In 'n Out burgers down yesterday, because they all need to play great tonight. The pregame report on flyers.com has a great bit about Olympic hopefuls playing in tonight's game. As many as 14 guys could be suiting up for their countries:

Canada: Jeff Carter, Mike Richards, Chris Pronger, Joe Thornton, Dany Heatley, Patrick Marleau, Rob Blake and Dan Boyle;
U.S. James van Riemsdyk, and Joe Pavelski;. (Keep your eye on Pavelski Flyers fans, this guy is legit and will help the US crush the world come February.)
Finland: Kimmo Timonen;
Latvia: Oskars Bartulis;
Russia: Evgeni Nabokov;
Germany: Thomas Greiss.

This is like a mutherflippin' United Nations out there tonight. Sadly, Rile Cote was left off this list as his country of Benchwarmia will not be participating in the Olympics.

It's a good night to see how Oskars Bartulis handles the pressure against a team that can roll out 3 scoring lines. Where the Kings had only one real scoring line on Wednesday, San Jose will be doing their best Flyers imitation. I expect a back and forth battle, both teams generating pressure, on the fly chances, and good ol' fashioned scrums after the whistle. As usual, my private eyes will be watching Giroux, JVR, and Pronger. These 3 are really dominating out there and I can't wait to see their matchups. If Jeff Carter can somehow manage to not shot a wrister from 3 steps in that gets deflected out of play all game I'll buy the entire HP Pavilion crowd a beer. Ex-Shark Matt Carle will be geared up for this one and I bet he gets on the scoring sheet. More than likely we'll be relying on Betts and Lappy a lot tonight and if they can keep playing like MVPs then the Flyers have a great shot to shut down the Sharks. Key guys are missing for both squads, but each team is deep enough to overcome it.

Two of the top teams in the league are set for a rematch tonight. It's also the weekend. That's like a 2 for 1 special at Chickie's. I officially give you permission to leave work early. That's right, after lunch, just head home. Tell your boss it's my call, then crosscheck him in the teeth. You worked hard all week, its time to live it up. Everybody IS workin' for the weekend, including the Orange & Black. Fuck the West, the best team is from Broad Street. Let's Go Flyers.

Be safe Bobrules Dave,

Actually headed up to Boston tonight. I've spent quite a bit of time up there since I was 15 (prep school pussy) and I can tell you one thing. Especially New Year's Eve and then even New Years night, there is going to by Philly and Boston blood spilled in the streets.

Philly and Boston are by far the biggest non-gang related late night fighting cities per capita in the US. Right behind the city of Somer's Point.

I'm going with a couple college buddies, tickets have already been purchased, 340$ a pop. I'll be in Boston to ring in the new year then drag my ass out of bed for the game. I'm praying its not under 10*F Jan 1.

I need to stop coming to work at 940 so I don't have to stay til 6 on a friday.

Everytime I watch the Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus trailer on youtube, a little part of me wants to see the whole thing, but can't ever bring myself to support Lorenzo Llamas.

I knew there was a reason why I check this site every day 20 times.

Lorenzo Llamas + Debbie + Mega Shark eating a plate = So gud. Make sure you have at least a 12 pack of beer while watching that movie though.

If Carcillo was from Latvia he'd be a lock. I wonder how many Junior players will be in the Olympics. Have to assume Sbisa's one fot he hottest things to come out of Austria since Vanek and mulled wine.
Matt Carle

Looking at the list of potential USA defenseman candidates, I think Carle has a really good shot. I hope he doesn't make it, but he might.

Benchwarmia?! Haha they are actually my dark horse pick to medal in vancouver- matty matt
well..

Carle should not (and will not) make the team off half a year's play--given his track record--and while the same isn't true for JVR, we better hope he doesn't. On the other hand, Jari Kurri just confirm he likes Mika's hot stuff, so make that fifteen, philadelphiaflyers.com!
