Flyers Gameday: The Other Shoe

"Fresh out the fryin' pan and into the fire..."

Tonight the Flyers are switiching up their diets. Gone are the John Stevens fats and carbs, in with Peter Laviolette's protein and veggies. Sorry, I shouldn't be posting this right around lunch, all my hockey puns start resembling a menu. We've lost three in a row and six of seven. Tailspin mode in full effect down in Souf Philly. Homer made the big move and now, we get to see how our team responds to a new coach. I'll say this, they better...or else it's the players who will be shipped out of here. We got the Caps tonight, a southeast powerhouse sans OV. We know we can beat these fuckers, the team just has to break out of their mental block. Simplify, play with heart, play with fire, play with intelligence. Victory.

We joined forces like Voltron with our good buddy Mike from the DC sports blog Fight For Old DC and got some answers on the Caps from a Flyers fan perspective. Here are our questions and his answers:

1.Will you let us win? We're sorry about that whole Game 7 OT thing. BTW, does a Flyers game still conjure up images of Joffrey Lupul?

You guys always have a shot up in the FU Center. I wouldn't be surprised to see a big letdown after the Caps jumped all over a terrible Florida team last night. Furthermore, it's been tough for the Caps to put together a true sixty-minute effort so far, so don't freak out if you all get down by a few goals...you've still got a shot. With regards to Joffrey Lupul...let's just say I'm glad he's not wearing orange and black anymore.
2. How's our boy Mike Knuble fitting in down there? The guys like him from what you can tell?

Knuble has been a huge addition to the roster, and his intangibles have made more of a difference than his actual play (although that's been pretty damn good when he's been on the ice). You see a greater tenacity with the young guys like Eric Fehr, Tomas Fleischmann, and Brooks Laich in front of the net, which is something the Caps lacked against the Pens in the playoffs. He seems like a natural fit in the locker room, and from the practices I've seen, he fits right in. If Brendan Morrison wasn't having a career saving year, Knuble would be getting even more credit, but they've both been solid, and in some cases spectacluar acquisitions when you consider their reasonable contracts.
3. Is Mike Green worth the points he gets in relation to the the number of 2-on-1's when he's on the ice?

Green can really be the most valuable player on the ice when his shot is on. He's got great handles and solid speed, which naturally puts a team on their heels when he's out there. Unfortunately, those 2-on-1's are created against agressive teams, especially on the penalty kill, so Greener tends to look bad against certain competition. Overall, I think he's worth the risk considering two things. One, our other defensemen (besides Pothier on occasion) are offensively inept. Two, he needs to be paired with a player that compliments him better in a first pairing. Unfortunately, that guy is either Karl Alzner or John Carlson, who both need a little more time to develop their games. My bet is that he'll gain a lot better reputation once Karl Alzner becomes a full-time NHL blueliner.

4. Mandatory OV question; Do you think he's tired of paying the press lip service for one trip and just overall playing hard as hell?

As far as Ovi goes, I think he's a little press-weary. People are really making a mountain out of a mole hill (check out SI's recent column comparing him to Marty McSorley and Chris Simon) with this thing. Some are even going as far as saying he was going to elbow Gleason before he swerved. It's ludicrous. Here's where I tend to respect Flyers fans more than Pens fans: You all understand that hockey is a contact sport. Pens fans complain that everyone is obsessed with Sidney Crosby, but I've heard more whining from their camp than ever this past week. I refuse to come out and say Ovechkin is a dirty player, but I will say that he can be a litte reckless. All these people that cry for a further suspension are kidding themselves. He brings it harder than almost anyone (Mike Richards would be one exception) on every shift, and he's not going to tone it down. He might be a little more careful, but the energy will still be there.

You can read our answers too on their end, covering Razor, the Flyers lackluster play, and which boxer from the Rocky franchise we think the Capitals remind us of. Shit is popping off tonight. I'm already drunk with anticipation. I hope the crowd gets behind the team early and the gritty guys give the fans something to cheer for. I guess the first thing the Flyers gotta do is score a mutherflippin' goal. They know they got a good guy canned with their shit play. Shit play that has to end eventually. Jeff Carter is blowing the fuck up tonight. Ray Emery is our #1, and will prove it tonight. Carcillo, Lappy, and Asham will be the fire tonight. Richie, Pronger, X, and Rabbit will carry the load. Fuck the Caps.

When shit gets stinky, you only have the other guys in the room to rely on. That that that that don't kill me, will only make me stronger. Let's fucking go Flyers.

Hmmm. Captain holds team meeting. GM fires head coach. Captain upset. Captain relinquishes captaincy. Team forefeits game vs. Caps. I hope the fans staged a walkout. These f'in primadonnas don't deserve to be in the NHL and get paid what they get paid.

Pronger hasn't been the answer this year or was in the coach?
