Intent to Hit: Briere Suspended

Intent to blow the whistle.

Intent to blow the whistle.

Intent to blow the whistle.

What about intent to hit, and being aware of where you are on the ice? Body checks don't come as a result of two players bumping into each other by accident. A hard hit is the calculated result of one player seeking out another, honing in on that player, and then delivering body contact.

In that shot above Briere isn't touching Hannan yet, but he's begun his hit about two strides ago. No one on the ice has even begun to react to the goal, meaning lift a hand, and someone who is propelling his body at an opponent at full speed, not looking at the puck (as Hannan shouldn't be doing himself) is expected to change his course of action?

It's fucking hockey. And Flyer coming through what is notoriously the most dangerous part of the ice with his head down deserves to get put on his ass as well.

From TSN:

After scoring to give Colorado a 4-2 lead, Hannan was blindsided by Briere who left his feet and drove his elbow into Hannan's neck. Hannan was forced to leave the ice and did not return.

Blindsided crest to crest. Right. If I was hitting a guy who was 5 inches taller than me I’d be projecting upwards too.

I've yet to see a clip where Briere leaves his feet (not his feet come off the ice as a reuslt of running into something that's moving 15 mph and weighs 200 lbs.) or he targets Hannan's neck. If you have one please post it below.

briere led into hannans head with an elbow. its definitely an illegal hit. just be glad richards didnt get disciplined for his hit on david booth. he would have been out for more than 2 games.

It's not that it was late (which it was) but also, he jumped into Hannan AND had led with his elbow. Even if Hannan had never shot it was a bad hit.

i actually feel bad for briere in this case. He was my least favorite player last year so I in no way have ever defended him before.
last year he avoided physical play and all contact as if he caught a case of 'simongagne'. this year danny b-rare (cause he was rarely there, Get it?!) has been flying all over the ice, getting mauled for parking at the top of the crease and delivering 5'10" versions of bone-crunching hits.
Here, he's provided the offensive spark for his club, is trying to finish his check and did get a little too high. Give him 2 minutes and call it a night (sorry scott hannan). If you suspend this kind of hit you'll need to suspend 1 player every couple of NHL games played.
The NHL ruled this way for 2 reasons only--neither of which was the hit itself. The injury and the Flyers symbol on the front.
C'mon now...

I can't find it, but Alitude had an ice level shot of this hit that is not in the YouTube highlight package (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUk1VY5JZzM)
and it looked really nasty - I'm sure that's what the NHL based its decision on. Hannan (6'1) has a good 3 inches on Briere (5'10), so don't you think he'd have to jump before the hit in order to get his arms into Hannan's throat? (Hannan suffered a neck injury on that play - its a pretty big stretch to think he hurt it on his way down to the ice.)
Colorado announcers said nothing

The worst thing about using Center Ice or Gamecenter to watch the games is that we usually get the opposing team's feed and their announcers. (If I lived near Buffalo, this would be a good thing.) Usually the other team's announcers are aghast when the Flyers are bullies, and they didn't even mention that the hit was anything out of the ordinary, much less worthy of a suspension.
