Randy Jones - Forget the Cap for a Second

Fran just directed us all to a humorous phone conversation on Hockey Outsider that got me thinking about this whole Randy Jones situation in a different light.

First of all, Randy Jones was made for L.A. On his SATs to get into Cornell he actually checked the "Other" box and wrote in "Tan." So good for him. I always liked him and am happy he'll get another shot in the NHL.

Now onto Homer.

Even though the Flyers are a profitable business they are still a business. A business that just saved $1.3M. That's a big deal. That's almost 20 average people's jobs at Comcast. So while it might prove to be a costly gamble come the return of Simon Gagne, I always have and will continue to believe that Paul Holmgren knows more about the situation than any of us. Does anyone know as much about your shitting schedule as you? Maybe the cute girl who unfortunately sits right outside the hallway to the bathroom, but probably not even her.

He lives this day in and day out. Even if his decisions are wrong they are not under informed. This was not an attempt to bring Randy Jones back to the Flyers. This was an attempt to get rid of Randy Jones. The timing may have just been coincidental. What's not debatable is that Randy Jones was taking up a spot on our very eager to grow AHL defensive corps. He had 1 assist in six games. Half of his salary is off Comcast's books with the year coming to a close.

What's being over-looked here is what exactly is Ron Hextall paying $1.3M for?

What is Hextall paying for? Take it away, Randy Jones:

"I know I'm not a great player and am possibly a little overpaid, but I also know that when I signed my $6M contract I was a 26 year old who had just put up 31 points in the NHL after notching 22 the season before. I looked like a safe investment and still truly believe that I am. My injury last season did more to affect my reputation than my actual play and it's still taking some time to recover from it - on both accounts. All very unfortunate."

Agreed on all points, except I feel at $1.3 million, Jones is a fine acquisition. He's a 4-6 NHL defenseman.

I think the only reason people were down on him as much as they were is the fact that he was an overpaid 4-6 defenseman, which is hardly Jones' fault.

When people see that $2.75 million figure and start planning out Flyers cap moves in their heads, that's when they'd start muttering about Jones. If he was making $750,000 annually, he'd probably still be a Flyer, and people would probably like him as much as they like players like Asham.

I agree with you that there's a business side to look at, too. Last year's Gauthier trade is an example. The timing made sense because the Flyers are now able to afford Jones under the cap if nobody claimed him.
