Flyers Beat Hurricanes, not a recap

I don't usually like when people cut and paste someone else's work into their post but there are some cases where it's necessary, and this is one of them. From Frank Seravalli's article in the Daily News:

"Four friends from middle and high school trekked to Raleigh to watch van Riemsdyk make his NHL debut, in which he recorded his first assist, on the Flyers' second goal, scored by Richards."

The reason I bring this up is, well, because I'm not sure that JVR should be palling around with high school kids, and especially not middle school kids. Where did he meet these kids? Is he hanging out at local schools when he's not on the ice? I just hope John Stevens or Homer speaks to him sooner rather than later. The last thing we need is to have the Michael Jackson of the NHL on our team.

Tight Pucks

- When Mike Richards scored and Simon Gagne assisted on it my fantasy hockey team earned two points. Which helped me scoot above some other Flyers bloggers that you may have been perusing this morning.

- Chris Pronger is literally everywhere out there. Is it gay to say that he makes me feel safe when he's on the ice? Gay or not it's true.

- I love coffee. If I had choose between coffee and hockey I'd choose coffee. But then I'd throw it in the face of whoever was making me choose and get both after I nut stomped him.

- Carcillo better watch it or Arron Asham is going to be playing on our awesome 4th line. What a disappointing fight that was last night, and I don't agree with Tim Gleason getting the instigator on that. I don't like what the NHL is trying to do. There is not a fight without an instigator. If they want to eliminate fighting they should just go with game misconducts.

- I wonder what Asham and Cote ate during the game. I bet some pretty healthy stuff. I also bet they didn't eat too much because it would be embarrassing not be hungry at the post-game meal.

- The Flyers are currently in 2nd place in the Eastern Conference and the Rangers are in 13th. Guess that Brashear pick up didn't really work out the way they had hoped.

- Interesting choice by Jon Stevens to go with the two lower case alternate captains to start the year. Wonder if it's a luck thing or if Kimmo and Gags will wear the honors on the home jerseys just to cut costs. Annnnnd I just read that they are indeed going with the cost cutting technique, only they are going to switch it up half way through the year. "Kimmo, shut up. Does this look like our locker room?"

I forget which period, (it was around beer number 3 so I'm thinking 2nd period) The Pronger actually got mostly beat on a cut inside and the carolina player got a scoring chance in close on Emery.

This didn't really upset me as much as show me exactly why I like The Pronger so much. He doesn't back off. He doesn't leave 5 feet of space between him and the incoming forward. He steps up, leaves only 2-3ft between himself and the opposing player, and dares them to either make a move around/through(haha yea ok try to go thru him) or get bodied/stickchecked off the puck. Theres no backing off and letting the guy work the perimeter while his teammates set up. He takes away time and space.

Sure, every now and then a guy does beat him and get a bad angle shot on your goalie. But the guy got no rebound and Pronger immediately shoved the forward away.

This seems much better than the usual plan of keep backing off, backing off, and the other team sets up in our zone and cycles and creates pressure on us time after time.

Less skilled defenseman leave that extra space, which allows the forward more time and room to do things, because they're afraid of being beat in close on a quick move. The Pronger is not scared, and steps up to them and forces them to do something.

Same props goes to Kimmo, who took that guy out(both he and the forward went down and crashed into the side of the net). But Kimmo does the same thing. Steps up and leaves less space and forces them to make a move, and when the guy tried to turn on the gas and go around him, Kimmo pivoted and took the body and didn't let him by.

I love having 2 top Dmen.
