Flyers Gameday: To Catch a Nashville Predator

What does this picture have to do with the Flyers playing the Predators tonight?
Not a damn thing, but it's giving me eye boners...

Tonight the Flyers take on the Nashville Predators in their only meeting of the year.  The hot and cold Flyers are taking on the solid Preds in what I hope will be a good game.  Frankly, I don't know much about the Predators.  They have 81 points, which is good for 7th in the West.  Tonight is "St. Patty's in Smashville".  And yes, "Smashville" is what Nashville calls itself.  So besides a hockey game, there will tons of drunk Nashvillians.  With the craziest schedule in history, the Flyers will look to show up with a consistent effort and high level of energy for the entire game.

I mean, lets get serious....if they can't get "up" for a game against the Blueshirts, how are the Flyers supposed to get "up" for a game against the Predators?  There are some agitators on the Preds (heavyweight Wade Belak and bizzaro-Asham Jordin Tootoo) but does that get the blood boiling?  What, do you get pumped because of a guy named Pekka Rinne, who as the Preds #1 goaltender has this team in the hunt of a playoff berth? (Rinne, who just signed a new contract, woulda looked goooood as the Flyers #1 next year) But if I were the Flyers, obviously I'd want to take all my frustration about World War 2 out on that sauerkraut Marcel Goc.  Yes, "The Goc" from Team Germany.  You just know that underneath that ugly Predators jersey there is surveillance equipment for his homeland.  If Germany attacks us and the land invasion begins in Nashville...well I know who I'd look at first....I'm just sayin'.

So what do the Flyers have to do?  Well they need to break down a great 1-2 defensive combo in Ryan Suter and Shea Weber.  They need to limit the sneaky play of JP Dumont, Martin Erat and David Legwand...all three will be buzzing around the net all night.  They also need to be physical if a Tootoo (Man alive, a Carcillo - Tootoo scrap could be the best fight of the year!)  gets out of control. The Flyers also need to simplify things and, frankly, play better hockey.  This surfer-vibe of "hey man, everything's cool, take another rip of the binger" isn't going to cut it as March ticks down to April.  I expect Pronger, Lappy, Richards and Kimmo to have this group constantly fired up and ready to battle for 2 points.  With desperate teams nipping at their orange and black heels, it's time to nut up or shut up.

The game means a lot to both clubs.  Dropping points at this point of the year is not a luxury one can afford.  You have to show up and play intense hockey for 60 minutes, and even that doesn't guarantee a victory.  Nashville is a solid hockey club that is well coached and well prepared.  Do not sleep on Nashville. Everyone either shows up tonight, or we're staring at 8th place. And to that point, if I see a Riley Cote on the ice, I'm not watching.  Fuck Dan Hamhuis.  We didn't want you here anyway.  Let's Go Flyers.

The Nashville game tonight is a perfect example of why the Flyers are great second round contenders. I could understand them losing to Turco in a shootout on Thursday, but giving one up to the douchebag no-namer in Tennessee is inexcusable.

The best part was when Giroux and Richards both tried almost the same exact move that Briere went for in the first round of the shootout. Priceless.

The second best part was when the team decided to finally show up with 10:14 remaining in the third period. I'd murder to work an hour and a half a day and get even a quarter of what JVR makes.

Holmgrem should recruit a group of real fans to go into the locker room after each period to tell them when they're being assholes. Laviolette is just lacking too much genuine, south philly anger in his coaching.

After being forced to listen to the last two games via WIP web feed, I'm struck by something... Chris Therien has found a hockey-related job that he is good at! During the Rangers game, he intro'd an ad for some snoring cessation service by recounting Coatesy keeping him up all night in the next hotel room with his snoring. "Coatsey came back to the room with at least a gallon of beer in him..." he says. The nameless douche that does play by play said something like "You're not supposed to talk about Coatsey being drunk on the air...", but Therien just kept going. Very nice. During the same game, he actually said "Like it or not, Sean Avery was the best player on the ice tonight." I mean, does he not know that Flyers announcers are supposed to be embarrassing homers?

Then tonight, as time wound down in the overtime, he says "The refs are going to be looking to call something on the Flyers. There were several non-calls that should have been called..." Again, he's the anti-homer.

By the time Therien left the Flyers I couldn't wait to see him go. He was some unholy combination of Pronger's speed coupled with all of Hartnell's smarts - in other words, an slow-moving moron. Now, I suddenly like this dude.

Dave in Oil Country: Cote can't do anything good. He needs more time in the AHL to get some stick skills and work on his forchecking. He's timid on the puck, can't really fight that well anymore and is a defensive liability. You can't question his heart, but the skills just aren't there...as seen from his 13 games played all year.

Dave, get the Oil to trade Tyler Seguin to Philly for Cote! It's a win-win for you!

You guys gotta help me out, cuz I just don't understand all of the hostility towards Cote. I'm a long time Flyers fan, presently living in Edmonton, Alberta (home of the #1 draft pick!) so I don't get the pleasure of watching Philly play all that much. Having said that, from my limited viewing, Cote always seemed willing to fight just about anyone, and I never saw him do anything that what horribly discredit the team, so what gives? He's not the #1 fighter in the league, but I thought he was probably the best enforcer currently on the team. (am I wrong?)
Did he commit an unforgivable sin?
Is it because he's "just a goon"? (Admittedly, I have a soft spot for goons - but I thought all Flyer fans did...)
What did I miss?
Note: I'm honestly not looking for an argument here; I'm looking for insight into why he seems to be disliked by so many of the Orange and Black faithful.

I swear, if I look on my uber smart phone tonight and see that Cote is playing, I will jump over the glass at the Panthers/Caps game I'm going too and punch one of the big players in the face, or just run to the press box and punch Ovechkin in the junk.
