I was going to use some cute headline like 'Flyers sign Holmstrom' to try and trick you, if only for a split second, into believing that somehow the Flyers had cricvrumented the NHL's protocols and rules to pick up a much needed offensive big man for in front of the net. But then I decided that was the behavior of a child molester.
Either way, on Wednesday the Flyers signed forward and Classmates.com member Ben Holmstrom to a amateur tryout contract. Last night, in only his second game, Holmstrom scored his first professional goal for the Adirondack Phantoms.
Holmstrom's bio and stats read like Rob Bellamy's - utterly forgettable. If you don't know who Rob Bellamy is don't sweat it, he's only been on the Phantoms for 2 years and will probably die there so you'll have plenty of time to see him. Holmstrom is a bit over 6 foot, over 200 pounds, and put up average numbers in college at Umass-Lowell. The one interesting aspect about him is that he was captain of the decent but not great River Hawks for 3 years. Man alive do we love leadership.
He's wearing #23 as the Phantoms finish out the 2009-10 season. Don't expect to see this guy in a Flyers uniform but hey, the Phantoms need players too. _ _ _ _ _ _
Also this just in (yesterday) from Frank 'one of the only Flyers writers I enjoy reading' Seravalli of the Daily News - the Flyers have signed one of the most coveted college prospects around to a 2 year entry level deal. His name is Mike Testwuide and many scouts consider him sexually mature enough to contribute at the pro level almost immediately. He is also from Colorado, attending Matt Carle's Colorado College (yes I know Matt Carle didn't go to Co Col), and really exploded with 21 goals this, his senior season, after netting 23 in his previous three seasons combined. Testwuide, who has an older brother who plays defense for the Houston Aeros of the AHL, is a big forward at 6'3 210. He loves tandom bicycles.
We are going to have the best ECHL affiliate in the fucking league!
