This afternoon the Flyers take on the Blue Barracudas in what is dubbed The World's Most Famous Arena, but hasn't held any significant events since John Starks dunked over Manute Bol. The high the Flyers took from yesterday's thrilling last second win over the Blackhawks was probably what kept them sane when a Rangers fan (not the weather) pulled the Amtrak power plug yesterday, causing the Flyers to spend over 6 hours sitting on the rails. So long in fact that they ordered food to the train. I'm guessing it was ice cream.
You already know what the Flyers are up to, but how about the Rangers.
Well, the Rangers are a team that is preparing to just miss the playoffs. The Flyers' inconsistencies have nothing on the Rangers'. They've been a mess from start to finish this year. Battles with the media, absolutely no scoring except for Marian Gaborik, and New York style attitudes have the Rangers looking more like the circus that visits every year than a viable NHL squad.
Maybe it can be all summed up by NY Post beat reporter and thorn in John Torterella's side, Larry Brooks. His entire article on the Rangers this morning is devoted to something that I, as I'm sure you, had totally forgotten about - Carcillo and Gaborik. Jody Shelley's now on the Rangers, Sean Avery's sure to be a huge pain in the ass as he was a healthy scratch on Friday as a result of not being a big enough pain in the ass, and the Rangers seem ready to rumble. My response to that is 'who the fuck cares.' If they got guys who want to fight, so do we. The End.
The Rangers have a really dangerous line in Prospal - Jokinen - Gaborik but it drops off significantly after that. There's the familiar faces of Dubinsky, Drury, and Callahan. And then Avery and ….that's actually kind of it for scoring. They're trying to make waiver claim Erik Christensen into something he's not and there are a couple forgettable Euros in blue.
You'd think that a team that has such obvious trouble scoring would need to have great defense in order to still even have a chance at the playoffs, but the Rangers don't. They have 2 rookies, Wade Redden, and Michael Rozival on their blue line. You could have my first 2 girlfriends as the number pairing and still lose every game with those guys - and those ladies never let anything in. The King's in net but a great goalie can only do so much so often.
These Sunday March games in NYC always have a strange feeling to them. Like the Flyers just need to get in and get out. 2 years ago the Flyers lost 5-4 in a shootout when Nigel Dawes and Brendan Shanahan scored. Last year the Flyers gave up 43 shots and lost 4-1. Hopefully the Flyers are focused today and don't tarnish the most exciting win since RJ Umbergered the Canadiens. A big win today, a blowout even, could get people talking about the Flyers again.
