Who knew Glen still had it in him. Talk about your late bloomers. Or perseverance. Or male pattern baldness.
His story has been well documented from his gansta childhood to his currently incarcerated brother, but despite a rough youth and a seemingly endless carousel of hockey towns and even countries, Metro is on the verge of challenging his career high in points this year. While he's already surpassed his career high in goals by netting 3 more than during his 2006-07 campaign with Atlanta, he's still 5 short of the 33 points he notched with Boston in 2007-08. With 12 games to go it's by no means in the bag, but a big game could have him flirting with the new achievement. At the age of 33 Glen Metropolit is the 5th leading scorer on the enigmatic Montreal Canadiens club. A team that has three huge (tiny) signings from just this past off-season in the form of Mike Cammalleri, Scott Gomez, and Brian Gionta.
The bitterness from losing Metro last year in exchange for nothing has subsided. Truth be told, I don't think he would have fit in with Philly this year, even with his 28 points. He's a guy that if he couldn't be playing hockey…he'd be playing hockey. The DEL, KHL, and Swedish Elite League are all on notice for when North America will no longer accept him as a pro. But before that Metro will become a 34 year old free agent over the summer. He's exactly the kind of local boy/man, cheap pick-up that Brian Burke would add to his 4th line in an attempt to regain some of the veteran depth that Toronto might be lacking up front. If I had to guess at this point I'd say that's where he ends up. Brian Burke, I'm guessing, was not available for comment.
If you can put up 30 points, play responsible defense, and stay out of the box - all of which Metro brings to his game - there's going to be a place for you in the NHL. He's currently 72nd in NHL scoring among centers, so do the math (30 teams x 4 centers). He'll surely test the waters this summer and it will be interesting when reports of a minor deal go through and once again the Metropolits are packing up their cars and heading to a new city.
