Let me make one last thing clear about Sunday's Rangers game before I never talk about it again - Riley Cote looked wonderful out there.
I was as shit-shocked as you were when I saw number 32 lumbering down the side boards in the opening minutes of the game. I believe I texted Fran a simple 'WTF', knowing that he would be staring mouth agape at the tv thinking the same exact thing that the other 20M Americans watching the game were (doesn't every Sunday afternoon game get millions of viewers since the Olympics?). And that would be 'what the Mark Summers is Riley Cote dressed for?'
But don't even act like he didn't look great out there with his trim haircut and his brand new Reebok 11k's with the tongue tucked in. The guy looked put together! And if there were a stat on it I'd prove it to you, but you're just going to have to trust me on this one. Riley Cote handled the puck more yesterday afternoon than he had in his previous 12 games this season. Maybe throw in last year too. He was carrying the puck, he intercepted a pass, and I don't care that his shot was from the red line - that puck was on net.
To say that the Flyers lost because Big Villey and Power were out of the lineup is one of those answers that is so easy to come up with because it's just flat out wrong. It's an attempt to quickly answer a difficult question because writers have deadlines. Team's don't, or shouldn't lose games because they swap marginal players - at least good teams. To place any of the blame on Peter Laviolette's lineup change, and therefore Cote and Asham, is as misguided as John Torterella looking exactly like Spy vs. Spy and not wearing a giant Dalian detective hat. Rockin' Riles was a lone bright spot for the Flyers out there yesterday.
And that's why Riley, this is dedicated to you:
