Matt Bradley: Making the Caps Look Foolish Since 2005

Flyers fans, this is Matt Bradley. He's the guy who got his face smashed by Daniel Carcillo about 6 weeks ago. He's also the guy who did this earlier in the week:

If Mike Richards geared down and decided, as the captain of the team, that he was going to do something about an injustice he either saw, suffered, or needed to back up, wouldn't you want to see him handle that mano y mano?

You see, Bradley is being heralded in D.C. for "stepping in" and protecting the future of the franchise. I even saw it in a pump up compilation produced by CSN in DC on Friday night before their Leafs game. Like he's Superman or something. But there is a huge difference between stepping in when your captain is being attacked and frivolously jumping into a one-on-one altercation, and in doing so undermining your captain. In this case that's exactly what Bradley did in a fight where OV could have held his own if not won, and put to bed the accusations that he needs to back up his borderline play for at least the next two to three years. In the clip his body language wouldn't lead you to believe that he was excited about Bradley's interuption into his and Downie's fight.

If Mike Richards shed his bucket and gloves and was lined up with Matt Cooke ready to go, and Arron Asham came flying in and started fighting Cooke don't you think Richards would be a little disappointed. Maybe if it was Eric Goddard or Donald Brashear (8 years ago) on the other side of that show down you jump in to protect your captain because he's punching out of his weight class, but not in a fight he easily could win. You just make him look like a chump.

Not that OV seemed to mind when the dust settled, as he went on to score 5 points on Friday night. But you have to imagine he addressed the room and thanked Bradley but told everyone that if the same situation ever occurs again he would like to be left to his own peril. He's the leader, he made a decision involving calculated risk, and someone on the team defied that - those are the basics.

Gretzky had 1.7 body checks in his career. So people going after him were purely trying to take out a star.

On the other hand OV has 75 hits each game. Some questionable.

But the bottom line is if your captain demonstrates a willingness to fight, and then you fly in and "save him," you make him look stupid. Your basically publicly defying him.

OV shouldn't have to fight if he doesn't want to. But when he does you should let him.

Maybe it somehow takes away from OV, as you say, if someone does the fighting for him. Thing is, it worked out okay for some dude named Gretzky for about 20 years.

And if I recall correctly, the smashed-face photo of Brads was from getting hit before he could get his gloves off to fight. Makes Carcillo a perfect fit for the Flyers organization, doesn't it?

All good points. I see where you're coming from now.

I understand your point but you can't treat OV like a rare Egyptian artifact for the enxt 10 years. He's gotta play hockey and if that means beating down a punk every 3 years than that's what he's got to do.

Your argument is based on the fact that fighting is unnecesary. Like a frivality. Mine is that it's as much a part of the game as running dudes over. Sometimes those dudes are going to want to fight you. It creates a strange dynamic in the room if everyone has to keep getting punched in the nose because Alex likes to play rough. And he never even takes a shot.

Downie is not a lumbering giant. Would have been a perfect time for OV to show the guys that he's in it too.

Even Lemieux dropped them.

And my point with Richards is that he's the captain and he's not the fighter he was in juniors - check out his last 7 "fights." But if he, as the captain, makes a decision it is not the place for a 4th liner to step in and basically tell him he's wrong.

Ok, I'm usually alright with things you all write about, but I just can't leave this one alone. First of all, you have to watch the whole sequence. Downie came after Ovechkin after a clean hit (and yes, he even agreed it was clean), and Ovi fought back in the scrum. After both guys came out of the box, Downie speared, then hooked Ovechkin, goading him into the fight. Ovechkin ran his mouth, but Downie pushed it towards a fight.

Second of all, don't compare Mike Richards to Ovechkin. They're two different guys, and Richards just isn't the offensive force that Ovechkin is. If Ovechkin breaks a finger or a hand in that fight, what good does it do the Caps? None. So what if he looks like a tough guy. He'll end up beating you on the scoreboard anyway. Philly fans might celebrate Richards for being willing to drop the mitts, but it's not a risk that Caps fans want to see out of their superstar...even if they are able to stomp the Flyers 8-2 without him.
