I was really caught off guard when Jim Jackson mentioned the fact that our "struggling" Flyers were 3-0-2 over their last 5 games during last night's win. So I turned to the trusty ole internet and sure enough it was true. And after last night's game against the Stars the Flyers are now 4-0-2 since their 7-0 shellacking at the hands of the Rangers. That's surprising.
Maybe we're just expecting too much out of these Flyers. Where but Philadelphia would we describe earning points in 6 straight games as being mired in a slump. Yeah, these games have been played against some fairly weak opponents and yeah, the Flyers have been spending a lot of their time in the defensive zone. But they've taken 10 out of the last 12 points. Maybe we need to take a couple steps back from the ledge.
The Flyers have been missing perennial top defenseman Chris Pronger for 5 of these past 6 games and have maintained their slim lead atop the East, now with 11 games to go against some decent opponents. It's like the Flyers have a playoff preseason over the next 10 days.
This little stretch is going to get the Flyers attention and give us all a good idea where this team is mentally heading into the playoffs. When the final horn blows on March 29th the city of Philadelphia will either be salivating for the post season or making plans to head down the shore for weekends in May and June without having to worry that they might need to be at the WFC to play their part in a sea of orange.
